One of the most critical concerns is the looming threat of landfill overflow. With plastic production outpacing recycling efforts, we’re approaching a crisis point. In the Cape Metropole, only two landfills manage the immense daily waste we produce. At the current rate, these landfills could reach or exceed their legal capacity within nine years, leading to rampant illegal dumping on available land. This scenario paints a bleak picture for communities, where waste collection may cease, leaving individuals to dispose of waste without proper infrastructure, exacerbating environmental pollution.
