From Waste to Livelihoods: Recycling to the Next Level

Through recycling, they are diverting waste from landfills and promoting a greener future for their community, and Baseline Scales is proud to play a role in their success.

In the heart of Cape Town’s Mitchells Plain township, young ‘Recycling Champions’ (ReChas) are transforming the local environment and economy.

One of these ReChas, Shevon, is a mother of two who previously worked as a waste picker. Today, she assists one of thirty ReChas in sorting and selling selected waste for recycling. Armed with an axe and a passion for her work, Shevon breaks down plastic tubs, preparing them for recycling. “This job helps me mentally, and I’m making a difference in my community,” she says. With a reliable stipend from selling recyclables, Shevon is able to support her family, including buying her son a suit for his Matric exam celebration.

CHALLENGE

Proud to be part of the solution

Zach, born and raised in Mitchells Plain, leads the project with a clear mission: address both environmental and social challenges. "We want to increase recycling, reduce waste in landfills, and improve livelihoods," he says.

With Baseline Scales providing precise measurements, the initiative ensures fair compensation for everyone involved, while also promoting local economic growth.

Since its inception in 2023, the ReCha project has grown rapidly. It now plans to expand from 10 to 60 ‘ReCha Nodes,’ where recyclable materials are collected.

The ultimate goal is to establish a material recovery facility, further scaling up the project’s impact. As the green economy continues to gain momentum, the ReCha project stands as a shining example of how recycling can not only protect the environment but also create jobs and improve lives. According to UNICEF, the green economy could help tackle South Africa’s high youth unemployment rate, and initiatives like ReCha are paving the way for future work in sustainable sectors.

"At first, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but I kept learning, and now my heart is fully invested. Together, we are proving that waste can indeed be transformed into livelihoods and a brighter, greener future for all.”
